My Mum used to talk of two of Martha's babies who died in infancy. Their names were Mona and May.
I have found Mona's birth and death records but have struggled to find anything about May.
Mona died just 21 months old. She was listed in the Births record in Dec 1909 and Death record in 1911. She was the 2nd child of Martha and Edward after Ida (Martha Elizabeth Ida) who was born in 1908 Then Vera was born in 1912.
Can anyone help find more information about May?
I don't remember Grandma ever mentioning either Mona or May but Mum said that she remembers Grandma telling her that when the babies were laid out in the parlour that she (Martha)came downstairs and cuddled them. How sad and how touching. I asked Uncle Ted a while ago about the 2 babies and he didn't remember, but he was born a lot later and maybe Martha didn't really talk about it.
I'd like to think that when we remember Martha's children that we include Mona, I'm sure Martha never forgot her even if she found it difficult to talk about her. Maybe we can also find a record of May.

This is amazing information.....I had no idea that Mom had a sister named Mona who died. I have never heard any mention of her or at least I can't remember Mom ever mentioning this.
ReplyDeleteI'm in New Jersey at the moment but as soon as I get back to North Carolina will have to call Derek to see if he has any info.
I agree, we should remember all Martha's children. Mom had a baby named Harry, between me and my sister Ron, who died when he was 3 weeks old. I was 2 yrs and 10 months. Mom and Dad always kept his memory alive. Every year on his birthday (November 19th) she would wonder what he would be like and every Christmas she would be a little sad and talk about him. He died mid December ... have the date at home.
Hi Susan I remember hearing about baby Harry. So sad. Here is a copy of the 1911 census record that shows that Mona was living at aged 1 yr and 6 months.

Can't find anything about May yet, will keep looking. She must have been born after 1911 as the census has details of total children born alive 2, children still living 2 and children who have died -blank.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if she died at birth would she still have been registered? I don't know if that could be a possibility. What a shame we can't see the 1921 census yet!
DeleteHi All......Just received Geg's info from Jackie on his research on Martha and see had 10 children - info says that Uncle Ted had a twin brother who died at birth and that there were two sisters, Grace and Mary who both died before 1939.
ReplyDeleteRay - did your dad know that he had a twin brother?
Hi Sue Just caught up on the blog and was intrigued about Jackie's information about Martha's babies. We have evidence of Mona from the census and birth and death records. It's possible that May could have been Mary? and I think that is worth following up on, however because my Mum's name was Grace Irene, I think it is unlikely that Grandma would call two babies the same name, so that one is a bit of a puzzle. I would love it if you can let us know the details.

ReplyDeleteI told dad that he had a twin last week after reading the info from Helen, he didn't seem to know anything about it, I must delve a bit more into that when I see him tomorrow.
Ray
See previous post /comment about twins-some info on there too Sue.

ReplyDeleteSpoke to dad about him being a twin and of cause he didn't know any about it, then after reading the info Helen had put on blog again I realized it was my dads father who had a twin brother who died at birth.
Ray
Thanks Helen....just re-read your post. You guys are great at digging up all this information.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the middle of a project for the Whitehead side of the family. I'm doing a family tree on Shutterfly and Gegs had info on the Whiteheads going back to 1604.
From our grandparents generation on down I have listed all the names of great-aunts and great uncles, then aunts,(Dad had no brothers) then our generation, then nieces, nephews and their children...each with dates of birth, who they married, etc.etc. Memories they have of Gran Whitehead and my Dad's generation.... Very long and slow process to get all this information from everyone though. Each 'family' has a page of photos too .... it should look great when finished. Auntie Mon (my Dad's sister) is going to be 102 in Sept. so want to bring it with me in June to give to her (a little early I know!!) but the book can be handed down to future generations. Maybe we could do something like this on the Johnson side of the family -- mind you-- that would be quite an undertaking, but what a wonderful thing to have. Let me know what you think. As long as I have all the info - I wouldn't mind putting it together.....but with the size of the Johnson side of the family, it could turn out to be rather large - and costly to print. I always wait for 50% coupons from Shutterfly....but at least it could be out there for anyone to purchase if they wanted to.
The Whitehead's one is about $60 so far....but am waiting for a 50% coupon!!
Let me know what you think.
Susan
